Install kcap
Two choices decide which steps you follow. Make them first
Where do your sessions live?
Section titled “Where do your sessions live?”- Cloud. A workspace at
https://<your-org>.kcap.aithat Kurrent runs and your team shares. Pick this if anyone else will ever read your sessions. While kcap is invite-only, a Team workspace needs an invitation code; if you don't already have a code, you can request one at www.kurrent.io/get-started - Local. kcap runs on your own Mac, nothing leaves the machine, and nobody else can see it. Pick this for one person’s private history, or to try kcap without an account. What the local edition is and isn’t has the full comparison
How do you want to set it up?
Section titled “How do you want to set it up?”- The desktop app. A Mac app that signs you in, finds your coding agents, imports your history and keeps the daemon running. Choose this on a Mac unless you prefer a terminal
- The CLI. An install script or npm, whichever you prefer, then a setup wizard in the terminal. Choose this on Linux or Windows, for a machine-based setup, or if you want every step visible
Then follow the one section that matches
Cloud, desktop app
Section titled “Cloud, desktop app”- Enter your invitation code on the Get started page, create your workspace, then download the app from Get set up in your avatar menu (Apple silicon, macOS 15 or later), drag it into Applications and open it
- Choose For your team, cloud and sign in with your work account. If your organisation already has a workspace, setup finds it; if not, it offers to create one
- On the agents screen, tick Record for each coding agent you want stored and Tools for each one that should get kcap’s tools. The app only lists agents it found on this machine
- Choose who can read new sessions by default. The choices are Nobody else, People I share a project with, and Everyone in the account for your organisation’s repositories. We recommend Everyone in the account: shared sessions are what let a teammate pick up your work, a reviewer see your reasoning, and the team’s knowledge build. If you would rather start with Nobody else, that is fine too; you can change the default later and share any single session when you want to
- Import the history already on this machine. We recommend it: your past sessions are what make recall, next work and knowledge useful from the first day, instead of weeks from now. It runs in the background
- Let the app put
kcapon your terminal path and run the daemon as a background service. We recommend both: the path gives you the terminal commands, and the daemon is what lets you run agents on this machine from the browser
The app opens on your workspace
Cloud, CLI
Section titled “Cloud, CLI”Either installer works; pick the one you prefer. The script, on macOS or Linux:
curl -fsSL https://www.kurrent.io/install | bashOn Windows, in PowerShell:
irm https://www.kurrent.io/install.ps1 | iexThe script downloads kcap, checks it against the release checksum, and starts kcap setup. Or npm:
npm install -g @kurrent/kcapkcap setupSetup opens a browser tab to sign you in and then finds every workspace your account can reach. If you already know your workspace, skip discovery:
kcap setup acme # https://acme.kcap.aiSetup then asks, in the browser where the workspace supports it and otherwise in the terminal, which agents to store, which get tools, your default visibility, and whether to import history. The same recommendations apply as for the app above: share with everyone in the account, import your history, and run the daemon. Leave the terminal open until it says it is finished
Check it worked:
kcap whoamikcap statusLocal, desktop app
Section titled “Local, desktop app”- Enter your invitation code on the Get started page, choose Free, and download the app from there, drag it into Applications and open it
- Choose For you, locally. No account is needed. The app downloads the local server to this Mac and starts it
- The agents and history screens are the same as the cloud path above. The visibility screen is skipped: a local session is readable by you alone, and you choose an audience only if you later move to a cloud workspace
The app opens on your local server. Everything in these docs works the same, except the features that need other people or Kurrent-managed AI; What the local edition is and isn’t lists them
Local, CLI
Section titled “Local, CLI”curl -fsSL https://www.kurrent.io/install | bash -s -- -- --localor, after an npm install, kcap setup --local. Setup downloads the local server bundle, starts it under a background service, and continues with the same agent, visibility and history questions as the cloud path. kcap local status shows the server’s state afterwards and kcap local open opens its web app
After any path
Section titled “After any path”Restart any coding agent that was already running so it loads the kcap hooks. Everything else about a particular agent is in Your coding agents
If something did not work, My session doesn’t appear is the place to start
